About Pandit Sekhar
Sri S. Sekhar was born in a music-loving family in Kolkata. He is the son of late Sri N. S. Mani and Late Smt. Parvathy Mani. He started learning Mridangam at the age of 6 and underwent extensive training under Late Respected Sri L. V. Vaidyanathan, the then foremost Mridangam player of Kolkata. He had his “arangetram” performances in 1966 at 2 famous temples of Kerala- ‘Guruvayoor’ and ‘Vaikom’, as per his late father Sri N. S. Mani’s wish. It is not out of place to say that he has almost single-handedly kept alive the best carnatic percussive traditions in Kolkata. He has trained a number of students for Mridangam, many of whom are performing regularly. He is still training many young aspiring students.
