About Pandit Sekhar
Sri S. Sekhar was born in a music-loving family in Kolkata. He is the son of late Sri N. S. Mani and Late Smt. Parvathy Mani. He started learning Mridangam at the age of 6 and underwent extensive training under Late Respected Sri L. V. Vaidyanathan, the then foremost Mridangam player of Kolkata. He had his “arangetram” performances in 1966 at 2 famous temples of Kerala- ‘Guruvayoor’ and ‘Vaikom’, as per his late father Sri N. S. Mani’s wish. It is not out of place to say that he has almost single-handedly kept alive the best Carnatic percussive traditions in Kolkata. He has trained a number of students for Mridangam, many of whom are performing regularly. He is still training many young aspiring students.

His influence has been such that even many tabla players have found it extremely useful to train under him.

He is also well known for his keen musicianship in North-South Jugalbandis as well as Indo-Western Concerts.

He is performing for the last 48 years and is an “A” grade artiste of All India Radio and Dooradarshan for the last 28 years. He has visited U.S.A., Canada, U.K., Belgium, Spain, Netherlands and Dubai for concert tours. Popular Tabla exponent, Bickram Ghosh has learnt under Sri Sekhar for 28 years relating to Carnatic percussion.

Awards and titles

  • Has received the title of "Pandit" from the Salt Lake Cultaral Association, Kolkata in 1997.
  • He received the title “Isai Peraringar” from Tamil Manram, Kolkata.
  • He also got the prestigious “Jadubhatta” Award for being a great “Guru” from “Salt Lake Cultural Association”

He has accompanied Ustad Amjad Ali Khan (Sarod) for concerts including at the prestigious “Dover Lane Music Conference” Kolkata. He has performed regularly in “Jugalbandis” as well as regular Hindusthani concerts of Pandit Tarun Bhattacharyya (Santoor), Pandit Ronu Mazumder (Flute), Pandit Tejendra Majumder (Sarod), etc. Has performed for a CD recording with Grammy Award winner Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Has played with great Tabla maestros like Pandit Kishen Maharaj, Pandit Shankar Ghosh , Pandit Swapan Chowdhuri, Pandit Anindyo Chatterjee, Ustad Sabir Khan, Sri Vijay Ghate and also the younger generation players like Sri Bickram Ghosh, Sri Shubhen Chatterjee, Sri Shubhankar Bannerjee, Sri Tanmoy Bose, Sri Abhijit Banerjee, etc.

  • Has on regular occasions performed live and participated in the CD recording of Bickram Ghosh’s “RHYTHM SCAPE” which has generated rave reviews.
  • He has played for the background score for films of late Sri Satyajit Ray (Hirak Rajar Deshe), Tapan Sinha (Bagh Bahadur) and late Sri Salil Chowdhury.
  • Sekhar quite recently accompanied a prestigious "jugalbandi" of Sri Shankar Mahadevan and Ustad Rashid Khan along with Pt Vijay Ghate on tabla in Kolkata
  • Sekhar retired as Senior Export Manager from Tata Tea Ltd(presently Tata Global Beverages Ltd)
He has trained a number of students for mridangam, many of whom are successfully performing regularly. Is still training many young aspiring students and has been imparting extensive lessons to many younger generation tabla players.
